On October 29, 2017, actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey, while appearing intoxicated, made a sexual advance toward him at a party in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. Rapp actually first publicly talked about this story in 2001 with The Advocate - but The Advocate elected to redact identifying details from the story.
On the same day in 2017, Spacey stated through Twitter that he did not remember the encounter, but that he owed Rapp "the sincerest apology” - he also took that opportunity to publicly come out as gay.
Spacey's decision to come out via this statement was criticized by many prominent gay celebrities, including Billy Eichner, George Takei, Lance Bass, and Wanda Sykes, as an attempt to change the subject and shift focus from Rapp's accusation.
In 2017, filmmaker Tony Montana alleged that Kevin Spacey groped him at a Los Angeles bar in 2003. "I had never been groped before, [Spacey] looked at me and said, in a very sobering voice & this sardonic look on his face: ‘This designates ownership.’”
In 2017, Boston TV anchor Heather Unruh alleged Spacey assaulted her then-18-year-old son in 2016. "Nothing could’ve prepared my son for how that sexual assault would make him feel as a man." The Unruh family brought civil & criminal charges against Spacey in 2018/19 for the assault, but because the victim’s mother admitted she deleted unrelated material off her son’s phone & the phone was ultimately lost - the cases were dismissed.
In 2017, actor Roberto Cavazos said Spacey‘s unwanted sexual advances toward young men were “common practice” during Spacey’s time as an Old Vic art director. “I myself had a couple of unpleasant encounters with Spacey that were on the edge of being considered assault.”
In 2017, actor Harry Dreyfuss (son of Richard Dreyfuss) explained that in 2018 when he was an 18-year-old senior in high school, Kevin Spacey groped him. Harry struggled with the experience, making jokes about it at parties to process it.
In 2017, 8 individuals who worked on House of Cards came forward with allegations: “I have no doubt that this type of predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status and position,”
Following Roberto Cavazos, several other Old Vic actors & employees came forward about Spacey to The Guardian -- accusing the Old Vic of ignoring the allegations.
In 2018, Spacey was charged with groping a massage therapist in 2016. The case was dismissed in 2019, due to the unexpected death of the man who accused Spacey.
In December 2018, Spacey posted the “Let Me Be Frank” video. While in character as Frank Underwood – he appeared to deny the real-life allegations against him. Described as “bizarre,” “stomach-churning,” “threatening,” and “creepy,” the video has over 13M views.

In 2019, NY passed the Child Victims Act that created a one-year look back to those who were under 18 when abused & had justice denied them as a result of NY's formerly insufficient statutes of limitations.
Permitted by this Act, on September 9, 2020, Anthony Rapp accused Spacey in a civil complaint about actions that allegedly happened in 1986.
Joining Rapp in the suit against Spacey is an anonymous man who accused Spacey of sexually abusing him in 1983 when he was 14.
On June 17, 2021, the anonymous accuser who filed with Rapp was dismissed from the case due to his refusal to publicly identify himself.
In 2020, Spacey and his production companies were ordered to pay $31 million to MRC, the studio that produced House of Cards, for violating its sexual harassment policy.
In April 2022 Kevin Spacey filed a motion in federal court to dismiss Rapp’s lawsuit, claiming the allegations made about Spacey’s conduct at the 1986 party were false and never occurred. The case was not dismissed and is set to resume October 2022.
In May May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. In court on June 16, Spacey strenuously denied all allegations. The UK prosecution against Spacey is set to resume on July 14th.
